WHAT DO WE DANCE?
OUR DANCES
Brimfield
Our twist on a traditional and very simple Welsh border dance from the village of Brimfield. An lovely example of it's not what you dance but what tune you dance it to!
Vixana The Witch
Written by the amazing Beltane Border Morris from Devon and danced with their kind permission. The dance is about a Witch who lived on Dartmoor and wasn't very accommodating to lost strangers!
The original dance is for 8 man sets but we have adapted the dance for sets of 4 to fit our smaller number of members. When we can we'll double up the sets for more impact.
Boudicca
An original self-penned dance by our Squire. Previously used in Raggedstone Border Morris we have given it's name an update as we feel the music and style of the dance fits the Warrior spirit of our defiant Celtic Queen who refused to kneel to Roman rule. She is considered a British national heroine and a symbol of the struggle for justice and independence. The kick ass Tune was found by a member of our previous side while surfing YouTube!
John Barleycorn
This version has been adapted from 'Dark Bonfire' an original dance by Hot for Joe Morris from Australia. Their version of the dance has no music (drum beat only) but we realised that the old English Folk song would fit the pattern perfectly and give it a British flavour. We tweaked the start and ending to fit the song. Thank you to Hot for Joe for their kind permission to use their dance as a solid foundation to our version.
Witches Reel
Original penned dance by our Squire to a popular Pagan chant of the same name. A work in progress....as dependant on us having a singer!
Brigid's Cross
Another original dance from Hot for Joe Morris with a Hawthorn & Hare twist. We've changed the tune on advice from their squire and added an extra figure as it was just a little short for dance outs. The original dance is called Dizzy Duo , but on watching and learning the dance we noticed that the chorus closely represents the pattern we weave a Brigid's Cross offering at Imbolc. Hence the name change for our Northern Hemisphere!
White Ladies
Self penned dance by the Squire very loosely inspired by the traditional border dance White Ladies Aston. A firm favourite with all our dancers...and the tune is bostin!
Queen of the Fairies
Self penned by the Squire originally written for Wytchwood Morris back in 2016, adapted & gifted to Blackthorn Ritualistic Folk Group in 2022 and then Raggedstone Border Morris. Each side she has brought it too has had a slightly different version. It will probably keep on changing & evolving for Hawthorn & Hare ... as dances do!
Stone Circle
Dance and tune written by our Morris friends Beltane Border from Devon and danced with their kind permission. Like Vixana, this is a dance that really fits our Pagan vibe - a lovely circular dance for Autumn & Winter 2025
